Sylvia's husband of three years has left her for another man. She, nor any of their friends realised that he was secretly gay. The most upsetting thing for everyone is knowing how unhappy he must have been, and not understanding why he felt he could never reveal himself to those who loved him. Sylvia's life is in pieces and her self-confidence shattered, but the one thought that gives her strength and solace is that her husband might now be able to find happiness. Still, she's alone, and she's confused, and she's feeling unloved. Ned is a close friend of her husband and the realisation that his best friend had kept this secret for so long has left him feeling emotionally fragile. He comes to visit Sylvia one afternoon to see how she is coping. Suspecting it might be best to leave her alone he gets up to leave, but Sylvia needs a favour from him first, she needs him to make her feel something again, to hold her close, and to make her feel desired.
